Drill Down

With regard to this news that Obama wants to explore for oil and gas off the east coast ...

I’ll wait until I hear more details before I react, although I will go on record as saying that if Obama wants to rig an oil derrick off of Jim DeMint’s back deck, I’m cool with that.

Maybe they can put a natural gas drilling rig in DeMent's front yard, a strip mine in his back yard and cross connect his septic system to his drinking water well.

Now this sounds shovel ready.

Let them drill, sooner or later someone's going to find there is just not enough there to keep the great industrial machine running.

And it won't have to result in end days or armageddon. Hard, backbreaking work, but that supported mankind for many mileniums.

I can't even get to comments on the posting below. What has happened to the old familiar fez sect I have enjoyed spouting off in?

In the future all cars will run on mud. As all forms of money will go towards that which is less and less our roads will be mud for lack of up keep. I am waiting for the people shit powered Maseratti Flatchero.

Ah, this reminds me of something seen in the restroom of bar near Harvard in the `60s: "The meek shall inherit the earth... but the rich will retain the mineral rights."

Today, that would also read "... and the government subsidies for mineral extraction."

Mostly, that's what this is about--no rational person gets excited about the profits derived from extracting miniscule amounts of oil in some of the most inhospitable places on earth (such as the northern coast of Alaska in winter). The tax offsets and the subsidies, however, are substantial.

If Americans knew the hidden costs they're paying of motor fuel, heating oil and plastics, they'd really have something to scream about, instead of the truly puny costs (by comparison) of some brown person getting minimal access to health care....
